Harry Potter Exhibition

I spent yesterday in Sydney with my three host sisters and my host parents. We went to the Harry Potter Exhibition which was absolutely great. It might sound weird but I have in some ways grown up with the story. The first movie was my first movie ever watched at the theater, and the books were probably the first books with more than 200 pages I read in english. Anyhow, they had done a good job with the presentation of the costumes. They also had Bertie Bott's Every Flavour Beans which I obviously had to buy. I can now proudly say that I know what earwax and vomit tastes like. Hmmm ^^,

After a two hour trip back from Sydney we naturally had to watch one of the movies. Harry Potter and the philosophers stone - how I love that movie!

I've also been watching the Australian Open nearly every night. It seemed to be the stupidest thing when I first started to watch it with my family, but I got right into it in the end.

Back to school tomorrow - woho...

You know you are Australian when...

26th of January - Happy Australia Day!

You know you are Australian when...

1. You’re familiar with Neighbours, Home and Away, Playschool, A Country Practice, Norman Gunston, Barry Humphries, Blue Heelers, Ray Martin, Bert Newton, Lisa McCune, Jon Burgess, Number 96, Molly Meldrum, Kerry O’Brien, and of course, Kerry Packer and Rupert Murdoch.
2. You know that Burger King doesn’t exist. It’s Hungry Jacks.
3. You know that snow is a memorable and freakish occurrence. Sometimes it’s even fake.
4. You know the difference between thongs and a G-string. And you own a pair of thongs for everyday use, and another pair of "dress thongs" for special occasions.
5. You know that “stubbies” are either short shorts or small beer bottles, a “gimp”, “bogan” or “geezer” is a random idiot, someone in trouble is in “strife” and you’re liable to burst out laughing whenever you hear of Americans “rooting” for something.
4. You know how to abbreviate every word, all of which usually end in -o: arvo, combo, garbo, kero, lezzo, metho, milko, muso, rego, servo, smoko, speedo, righto etc.
5. You know that some ppl pronounce Australia like “Strayla” and that’s ok.
6. You know that there is a universal place called “woop woop” located in the middle of nowhere… no matter where you actually are.
7. You know that while we call our friends ‘mates’, we don’t use terms like ‘sheila’ and ‘shrimp on the barbie’, contrary to popular belief.
8. You know that none of us actually drink Fosters beer, because it tastes like shit. But we let the world think we do. Because we can.
9. You’ve seen Gallipoli, Crocodile Dundee, Young Einstein, Muriel’s Wedding, The Castle, Beneath Clouds, Strictly Ballroom, 40,000 Horsemen, and maybe even WolfCreek.
10. It makes you happy when someone in Hollywood is actually Australian… Mel Gibson, Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Baz Luhrman, Elle MacPherson, Olivia Newton-John, Midnight Oil, ACDC, INXS, Greg Norman, Cathy Freeman, Dawn Fraser, Pat Rafter, Ian Thorpe…
11. One word: Skippy.
12. You know that Sydney 2000 was one of our proudest moments in history. We just fucking rock.
13. You've done the "hot sand" dance at the beach while running from the ocean back to your towel.
14. You know our country has never been conquered by a foreign nation (you don’t count 1788).
15. We know that the Metric system will always be better than anything inches, feet, pounds and fahrenheit will ever offer.
16. You drive on the left-hand side of the road.
17. If you’re a pedestrian and cars are stopped at a red light, you will fearlessly cross the street in front of them. ‘Hit and runs’ just aren’t cricket. Because Aussies stick together.
18. You know that New Zealanders are basically our naive country cousins, who have a weird fush-and-chups accent and, for some bizare reason, think that they invented pavlova. They are to be pitied. They have no hope of gaining the upper hand in the endless sporting rivalry between our two nations.
19. You know that you can’t eat Fantales alone… Otherwise who will you play the ‘Who am I…’ game with when you’re reading the wrapper?
20. You stop greeting people with "hello" and go straight to "how ya doin'?"
21. You know that Americans think we’re all Steve Irwin clones. And crickey, they couldn’t be more wrong.
22. You know that lawyers wear wigs and gowns. And we make it look good.
23. You have some time in your life slept with Aeroguard on in the summer. Maybe even as perfume.
24. You feel obliged to spread salty black stuff that looks like congealed motor oil on bread… and actually grow to like it. You’ve also squeeze Vegemite through Vita Wheats to make little Vegemite worms.
25. You believe that democracy means the freedom to draw caricatures of good ol’ Johnny Howard.
26. You have the ability to compress several words into one – ie ‘g’day’ and ‘d’reckn?’. This allows more space for profanities.
27. You’ve ever used the words – tops, ripper, sick, mad, rad, sweet – to mean good. And then you place ‘bloody’ in front of it when you REALLY mean it.
28. You know that the barbeque is a political arena; the person holding the tongs is always the boss and usually a man. And the women make the salad.
29. You say ‘no worries’ quite often, whether you realise it or not.
30. You know what fairy bread tastes like, and you can’t imagine your childhood without it.
31. You know the first verse to the national anthem, but still don’t know what “girt” means. And you’re ok with that.
32. You’ve drank your tea/coffee/milo through a Tim Tam.
33. You know that backyard cricket is a nice way to bond with family and the rubbish bin. And the ‘one bounce, one hand’ rule always applies.
34. You know that we are home to the just about all of the world’s deadliest of animals. That’s why if anybody messes with us we’ll get some funnel webs on their arses.
35. You see people walking bare-foot on the footpath and don’t scorn…. because you’re doing it too.
36. You know that in summer a seat belt buckle becomes a pretty good branding iron.
36. You know what trop-fest is and it makes you happy.
37. Sausage rolls and meat pies. End of story.
38. You firmly believe that in the end, everything will be ok and have offered advice that included the words, “she’ll be right, mate”.
39. You have a story that somehow involves an excessive consumption of booze… but you can’t remember.
40. You own a Bond’s chesty. In several different colours.
41. You’ve ordered a steak the size as your head and only paid $5 at your local RSL.
42. You know that Italy should never have been granted that fateful kick in the 2006 Soccer World Cup.
43. You know how to slip, slop, slap like it’s nobody’s business.
44. You’ve heard the Prime Minister dismiss anyone who disagrees with him simply as ‘un-Australian’, and that’s enough to make us sit down and shut up.
45. You know that the value of a public holiday is measured in terms of alchohol. God bless the queen and her 4-day birthday.
46. You refer to someone you like as “a total bastard”, but call someone you don’t like “a bit of a bastard”.
47. You know there’s no lbw in backyard cricket, and over the fence is out.
48. You know Drop Bears exist. Positively.
49. You know you that roo meat tastes pretty good, but not as good as barra. Or a meat pie.
50.You know Australia IS the best bloody place on earth. Bar none.

trololo...

I have no idea where the holidays disappeared to. But when I think about it: 6 months feel like one week, so 5 weeks are only a few days. I've been busy all the time, done travelling, been out with friends, but also with my host family. I also wanted to use this opportunity to thank all those people who make this year to what it is. It wouldn't be half as good without my lovely host families, my friends, Rotary and to everyone else I've spent time with. THANK YOU!

As mentioned before, our outbound students have now started their exchange. It is great to see that they are enjoying their first days overseas. While staying with some friends in Newcastle we spoke to the one who is Norway at the moment. He's actually staying with my family for one week, and it was soooo weird to see him sitting on his computer in my room. I don`t mind him staying there at all, but it just felt so weird that he was there. I mean, I saw him in Australia just a few days ago, and now he's sitting in my room. I just can't get my head around it. haha.

The weather has been pretty bad lately. It has been raining and raining and raining. Some people say it is the coldest and wettest summer over the last 51 years.

It's Australia Day tomorrow!! woho!

Good, but also bad news from PNG. Let's start with the good one...

The cleaning of the hospital has already shown it's results. During our trip in November we cleaned, painted and delivered Mother & Baby packs to encourage women into the Clinic to give birth. Thier history showed 8-10 births a month. During December they had a record of 21 births, and 6 during the first week of January. Thanks to the team who worked so hard cleaning and painting and everyone who donated items for the Mother & Baby packs. Together we can make a difference!

I was really looking forward to go to PNG again in March, for many reasons. To continue the work we started, to meet my two sisters and friends again are only two. It is with great disappointment and frustration that we have to postpone our volunteer trip to PNG in March 2012. With the upcoming elections in PNG we feel it is best that the visit be postponed until after the elections are settled later in 2012. The team will continue to work on the project from home with a view to returning later in 2012.  Because I'm leaving Australia before the text trip, I might not be able to go back, even though I would love to.

I got a letter from a girl in PNG yesterday which was really exciting. I sent one to her a couple of weeks ago, and I'm now going to send her two activity books (english and maths).

Today I'am again going to Sydney. I've probably been there six times during the holiday, and I'm going again next week. We are going down to the airport to see off the outbounds who are starting their exchange. It has been a great time with them!

SIX MONTHS IN AUSTRALIA TODAY!!

I can't believe that six months gave gone so quick! It feels like I arrived yesterday, in a positive way. I have had such a great time, and the thought that I have less than six months to go scares me. There are so many more things i wanna do!

I spent the weekend in Sydney with my host family coz my sister came back from her exchange in Austria today. It was so cute when she arrived. We were all looking at some people next to us who were waiting for their daughter/friend to come home. They had brought their instruments along and had written a song - it was sooo nice! We were looking at them, and suddenly someone behind us said "Hi Mum!". There she was in her dirndl! We felt pretty bad for not seeing her, but anyway...

I think we walked like 10000 km around Sydney on Saturday. We went to the aquarium, to the botnical garden, the Governor house and to the Opera house. After six months here, I finally had a look inside it :D Great day, even though my feet are killing me.

Together with one of my friends I had my first surfing lesson on Friday. It looks so easy, but it is not! The lesson lasted for 80 minutes, and I managed to stand up once. My muscles are still really sore, and I got this massive bruise on my arm. But I definitly want to learn it!

Love this place!

Hi!

Nelson Bay is defenitly one of my favourite places here in Australia. I have been there a few times already, and I like it more and more every time!

We drove down Thursday morning and were going to stay with some friends for the night. Their little holiday place had ocean view and it took us only a few minutes to walk to the beach. It was a plesent day, so we decided to walk up to a lookout. The view from the top (160m) was magnificent! It's impossible to describe what it looked like, you had to be there. Lots of people had taken ingraved locks to the top, and locked them onto the railing. A really cute idea!

We had a fantastik dinner, and the recipie definitly goes into my collection. I got up at seven the next morning and had a 6km long run along the beach. Where else can you do that?

We had a four hour drive through the bush to Sydney yesterday. It was definitly nice to see a different side of Australia :)

Happy New Year!

Hi guys! Happy New Year!
I’m a bit behind with my updates because my holidays are fairly busy at the moment. Well, lets start with ”Romjula”. My first host family took me to the Gold- and Sunshine Coast for a few days. It took us about 9 hours to drive up, not including the stopovers. For instance we had a stop at Byron Bay.  A place that has turned out to become one of my favourites here!
We had a look around the area, and also visited a cute little village called Montville with all these little shops along the street. You know, the shops with the stuff you don’t need, but could come in handy.

The beaches were beautiful, of course – never-ending sandbanks. The water temperature was about 25.
We spent New Years Eve back at the Gold Coast after a two-hour trip back from the Sunshine Coast. Surfers Paradise +++++++ In the evening we had a five course dinner at ”Glass”, a beautiful restaurant. It was a GREAT night.

We also visited the Big Banana, The Big Pineapple and saw lots off other big fruit. Hihi
I spent the last two days in Newcastle with some other exchange students. We went ice-skating on Tuesday afternoon. Definitely the first time I’ve done it in a skirt and singlet! But still a bit funny to see people ice-skate in tiny little shorts.
After a short night, we all went to the lake. A great, and sunny day (some more sunscreen could have been useful)! I tried water skiing. Well, I might stay to normal skiing in snow… Still good fun! After a hot day it was surprising that it suddenly started to hail, even though it only lasted for a few minutes.
